"HMD Retrieve Error" on the Steam Frame. (IMPORTANT FOR DEVS, PLEASE READ)

Recently I’ve got my Steam Frame.

My first reflex was getting my FBT, my headset and calibrating everything so I could have the best experience ever.

When I tried to calibrate my FBT, I got that error message: HMD Retrieve Error.
With a height under 10, always.

I’ve researched some information in the hope of solving this, but I’ve found that I can’t do anything about it.

The first solution I’ve tried is: Deactivating the VR Automatic Height.
Spoiler: Not the solution.

VR Automatic Height calculates our size automatically based on HMD data.
HMD Height Retrieval recovers our position in SteamVR’s space.

So manually setting our height doesn’t change anything, because Rebocap needs to get the data from SteamVR’s space.

That’s because Rebocap reads " vr_headset_height".
The Steam Frame doesn’t have it under that name.
Its name is “frame_hmd”, so Rebocap can’t find “vr_headset_height”, which causes the error to appear
(Not 100% sure it’s the actual reason, that’s what I think)

Now, with all this information, I’m aware that I can’t do anything about it.
The only things I can do are:

  1. Post that.
  2. Wait for the devs to do something.

I genuinely hope a dev sees my post because it’s quite important for Steam Frame users.

FOR THE USERS
I’ve found a way to bypass that issue.

  1. First, adjust the height of your play space with the joystick.
  2. When you’re done, look at your roof and press the Steam button until you recenter, it takes a few seconds.
  3. Be sure your VR Automatic Height is deactivated on Rebocap and you’ve entered your size manually

Try to calibrate your FBT when you’re done, if it doesn’t work, recenter the same way but this time be on your tiptoes to gain more height

Now it should work fine.

It’s not a 100% efficient tip, so except some imperfections
